Very thought-provoking post. It brings to mind a saying by David Hawkins: We are limited, can't tell truth from falsehood, and don't really know what's good for us. In a similar way to your story, I am slowly starting to see that almost everything painful that has happened to me actually was good for me (once I finished with it), and strangely, in a way, I wanted it too.
